Are We Really Having That Much More Rights And Freedom here???

I heard a lot about the passing of Obama's healthcare bill lately. I'm not into reading political news or anything that has to do with the government of America. I always feel like, "well, I don't care, what does that have to do with me... I'm not an American... Besides, reading romance novels from Nora Roberts is a lot more fun!"

But I'm going to be married to an American... So I guess I better spare a minute here or there to read how this boring health bill is going to affect my hubby to be, and our future American children....

After reading about what Obama posted on his website and what others were saying about it, I'm concerned. I can't believe the American people can acutally let Obama push this bill down their throats. $1 trillion dollars to cover 30 million uninsured doesn't sound like a great plan to me. The taxpayers will be spending $33.3 million on each and every one of this uninsured person in America (yes, person, they don't even have to be a citizen...) over the next 10 years just to have them all insured...

Just how many of this 30 million uninsured people are going to get so sick in the next 10 years that each and every one of them are going to rack up $33.3 million medical expenses they can't pay??? It will cost the taxpayers a lot less money to just pick up their medical bill and pay for it as it incurs....

For those people like me who have good insurance already, our premium is still going to increase. Obama's healthcare bill is not going to bring the premium down for the rest of us. Medical treatments are expensive, cause the medical techonolgy will just get more sophisticated and therefore cost more. This will be one of the reasons why our premium will keep rising still. Increase in labor costs in both medical personnel and insurance adminstrative staff, increase in risks of lawsuits, increase in interest rate on business loans that insurance companies need to do business, that doctors need to obtain equipment, that drug companies need to make new drugs... All these and more are giving our health insurace premium a sure increase. The cost of borrowing (your mortgage payment, your business expenses, thus everthing we pay for from hamburger to drinking water, and naturally our insurance premium) will increase as interest rate rises due to the government's huge debt, even without the rest of the cost hike factors...

Just read this news article and you will see how Obama's healthcare bill is so unheathy for America's financial future.

I don't have the previlige to vote , but I hope those of you who can vote, to excercise your voting rights intelligently. You should get involved and not let your politicians do whatever they please. Otherwise, what's the difference between living in America and living in China??? I hope all of you out there have the sense to say no to an expensive health bill that really makes no economic sense. I hope all of you out there can see clearly that this bill is not good for America, not good for your children...

For those of you who don't have insurance and who are sick, I sympathize, but there is a cheaper way to help you than this bill. (like giving you tax credit for medical expenses on your tax return without the "7.5% above adjusted gross income floor or any floor limit".) Like I say, it's just cheaper for us to pick up your medical bills than paying for this expensive national insurance program, run by the inefficient Obama Co. Insurance.

When I filed for my tax return the first year I arrived at the U.S. , my first question was, "why can't America give medical expense credit to the taxpayers?" How nice it will be if only your tax liability for the year is $5000, and you spend $4000 medical expense and the government gives you $4000 of tax credit, meaning, instead of $5000 tax due on your bill, you get $1000 tax bill...

But under the current tax law (what idiot spent all this paper and ink to make this worthless law), you can only deduct your medical expenses that is more than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. If your adjusted gross income is $40K and you spent $5k on medical expense, only $2000 of the medical expense is deducted from your adjusted gross income to arrive at taxable income. $5000 - $3000 (7.5 % of 40,000) = $2000. Assuming your effective tax rate is 20%, your real actual tax benefits from this $5000 medical expense is only $400 ($2000 x 20%), meaning it only helps you lower your tax bill by $400. But this is only the case if only you use itemized deduction (deduction allowed by the tax laws) instead of standard deduction (a default amount set and provided by the government to everybody). Most people don't have enough itemized deduction and have to use standard deduction. Now, you can just toss away all those doctors and medicine receipts that make up the $5000 medical expenses you spent. You don't get to lower your bill by even $400. Nada, nothing. Most people don't get to really deduct the medical expenses like they think they can. All my medical expenses were worthless to my tax returns filing all these years I've been in America. America is a very confusing country, there are all kinds of laws that are just created to take spaces in paper and to confuse people without doing much good. They only attempt to make people think they are good for them... This is just one of the many, many many laws I found in this country that is mostly worthless to average people like me....costing people more accoutants' fees to go through shoe boxes of medical receipts... In the process of sorting through all the medical bills and receipts that are in most case, nothing, but craps to you, your accountants got to bill you more of their time....

I always think a medical expense tax credit that completely phrases out when adjusted gross income is over $200K, with unused credit being allowed to be carried forward indefinitely, is a more beneficial healthcare reform than this $1 trillion dollar bill.... I rather have tax credit than this Obama healthcare bill, cause I'm already insured by my employers' group insurance. I want to be able to deduct my co-pays and the prescriptions I pay for....

Anyway, now there is going to be just another law to take space of thousands of pages, scrambled with more words and inefficient legal sentences, and then creating more gray areas and the need to pass more law and print more pages to clarify.... It's the Obama Healthcare Reform Bill which Americans just got to pay for it, whether you want it or not. May be instead of spending time blogging about books, we should spend time lobbying to save our tax dollars....

Book Review: Angels Everywhere by Debbie Macomber

This book is a Christmas series of two stories that follow three angels' quests to help six women in two metropolitans to find love. The stories are feel-good stories that are both heart warming and simple to read. If you enjoy reading some old fashioned romance that portraits strong family value, this is the book. Even though the stories are supposed to be set in the mid 90s, I myself find them sound a little too 1950s because the female characters in the stories didn't seem to have other goals besides getting married and having children. While one of the characters worked as a nurse and another worked as an inner city school teacher, I don't remember what successful careers the rest of the women were having. The book just doesn't talk much about what the women do for a living, it is rarely mentioned. When it is mentioned, it's either too vague or too general. It's the same thing with the cities where the characters reside. Sometimes, I feel the stories over simplify the two cities and the metropolitan lives. The book gives me a small town feel even though the setting is in two big cities. While I find the stories sometimes too superficial and too simple minded, I enjoyed reading them. I just like the morals and optimism they advocate.

All You Need Is Love, and Other Lies About Marriage

Have you read this book? Submit your review for this book and get a beautiful jewelry set for free.

Book Description: Why is it so difficult to remain married in the twenty-first century, and what can you do about it?

We all know that half of today's marriages end in divorce, but we tend to believe that our own marriages are safe. As psychiatrist John Jacobs explains in this fresh and impassioned book, marriages today are incredibly fragile, and unless a couple understands what is making contemporary marriage so vulnerable to dissolution, the marriage is at risk.

Part of the problem is that people refuse to see how social and historical forces have changed the very meaning of marriage, causing serious interpersonal unhappiness. Because of increased longevity, married people live together longer than at any time in history. There's been an erosion of the social and cultural forces that traditionally kept marriages together. Confusion over gender-role responsibilities, increased expectations of sexual satisfaction, and intense time pressures on couples to work and be successful all create marital stress.

And yet, most people don't acknowledge the problems in their marriage until it is too late. We tend to believe in the "lies of marriage" -- such concepts as soul mates, unconditional love, that children improve a relationship, that the sexual revolution has made marital sex more pleasurable, or that egalitarian marriage offers couples easy solutions -- and forget to engage in the constant hardwork required to keep our marriages alive.

Dr. Jacobs believes that most marriages have significant problems at some time, but until we recognize the new realities of marriage and develop the skills required to sustain a loving, intimate relationship, marriages are at risk.

Of course marriage is about love. But that's just the beginning.

The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary

Have you read this book? Submit your review for this book and get a beautiful jewelry set for free.

Book Description: The Professor and the Madman, masterfully researched and eloquently written, is an extraordinary tale of madness, genius, and the incredible obsessions of two remarkable men that led to the making of the Oxford English Dictionary -- and literary history. The compilation of the OED began in 1857, it was one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken. As definitions were collected, the overseeing committee, led by Professor James Murray, discovered that one man, Dr. W. C. Minor, had submitted more than ten thousand. When the committee insisted on honoring him, a shocking truth came to light: Dr. Minor, an American Civil War veteran, was also an inmate at an asylum for the criminally insane.
This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

Book Description: Molly Somerville loves her career as the creator of the Daphne the Bunny children's book series, but the rest of her life could use some improvement. She has a reputation for trouble that started even before she gave away her fifteen-million-dollar inheritance. Then there's her long-term crush on the quarterback for the Chicago Stars football team her sister owns -- that awful, gorgeous Kevin Tucker, a man who can't even remember Molly's name!

One night Kevin barges into Molly's not-quite-perfect life and turns it upside down. Unfortunately, the Ferrari-driving riving, poodle-hating jock isn't as shallow as she wishes he were, and she soon finds herself at a place called Wind Lake. Surrounded by paintbox cottages, including a charming old bed-and-breakfast, Molly and Kevin battle their attraction and each other as they face one of life's most important lessons. Sometimes love hurts, sometimes it makes you mad as hell, and sometimes -- if you're lucky -- it can heal in a most unexpected way.

Blogging For Business: Everything You Need To Know and Why You Should Care

May be this book was a good book when it was first published, even then, I doubt it... As of today, this is a really worthless book to me. I recently started blogging as a serious hobby and I was hoping I could learn a few things from this book to improve my blog. I read the entire book and I had found nothing that is useful to me, nothing at all.

I'm not a techie and I'm no experienced blogger and if I can't find information from this book that is relevant or helpful to my blogging endeavor, then this book is pretty lame.

Most of the book talks about what a blog is, what types of blog there are (product blog, CEO blog, employee blog, company blog etc, etc...). I just wonder who really needs to read these to find out a product blog is about the products, an employee blog is about the employee's daily mumbles and chitchat about his work, and a personal blog is of course about your personal tidbits and just anything about you....

The book also talks about editing, reviewing and approval of blog post and comments (which everybody knows what editing and reviewing are all about, we are doing this with everything we write and put out there, even our email, before we send it out!)... More verbal garbage like this is found to just make a point to say your blog's design is really up to you but it's best for the design to reflect your company's brand or your product or whatever you are blogging about... In the end, no one can find out from this book exactly how to design a blog or at least where we can get the tools or help we need to create the designs that we need.

Most of the blog directories or search engines mentioned in the book (may be they were once the coolest sites) are as of now, on the verge of being eliminated by either competition or the evolution of blog technology.

I don't really know who are supposed to be this book's target readers...For individual bloggers who blog for hobby or for whatever ambition, this book is totally not going to help. Most of the book is just quotes of blog posts from big companies like Apple Computers or GE... If not, it talks about the "about" pages of various stale blog search engines or diretories. For individuals looking for resources to improve the look of a blog, or to improve content or traffic, you won't find anything that is relevant or useful. Some of the great strategies of promoting a blog, according to the book, are paid advertisement or listing the blog on your website, on your company brochures, or promoting it in your trade show in your booth.... Like it's anything innovative for companies? If this book is for executives or people who work in big companies, then this book can't offer anything remotely as knowledgeable as their own IT or internet marketing personnel can offer. But for entrepreneurs or hobbists like myself who have nothing and know nothing to begin with, this book provides no specific instructions on helping us do anything. This book is just text that fills up pages but has no substance of how to get things done.

In my opinion, this book is too general, too vague, too lacking in terms of brilliant ideas and strategies that teach us how to effectively execute a popularity boost for our blogs, particularly if you are new amateur bloggers like myself.

Thanks to the blogging platforms and widgets nowadays, it's relatively easy to set up a blog without knowing anything about blogging... From my experience, by actually doing it, by trying out all the buttons on a blog platform and reading other people's blogs are 100 times more helpful than reading this book. The blogging landscape has evolved so much that this book has really become outdated and useless. After reading this book back to back, I realize I need to look for another book that can really help to improve my blog. If you know of any, please let me know.

I Like The "Librarians" A Lot

Last Saturday when I was visiting with my fiancé in Redondo Beach, I went to the Redondo Beach library to return the Modern Bride magazines that I checked out there but never had time to even flip a page. This is the first library in America I ever checked out any item from. (see my past experience with libraries from my previous post... ) I really love the library there cause it's very nice both inside and outside. There is no wiered smelly patron... The shelves are very well organized and the place is modern and extremely well maintained. And boy, how I love the parking facility there!

Anyway, the librarians there are very helpful, friendly and I can't say enough good things about their dedicated service there!!! I went home and I told my fiancé my enjoyable visit in the library his tax dollar funded (Redondo Beach isn't part of the City of Los Angeles) and I said, "I really like the Liberians !!!" He asked, "Where did you meet these Liberians?" I replied, "In your library... They are so very wonderful..." He then cracked up and said, "What were you and all these Liberians doing in the library? Were you trying to help the Liberians return to America from Liberia because you like them so much ...hahaha.......I bet you had never met a Liberian in your entire life......"

Because English is not my first language, I pronounced "Librarians" as "Liberians".... My fiancé was right, I had never met one single Liberian in my entire life:))) When I realized what I had been telling him, I couldn't stop laughing at myself.... This wasn't the first time I cracked myself up because of my English, and I really enjoy being a non-native English speaker here, it just makes everything sound so much more fun.

Now, at twenty-three, her discovery of a 1943 letter from the famous philanthropist Abigail Rockefeller to the late mother superior of Saint Rose Convent plunges Evangeline into a secret history that stretches back a thousand years: an ancient conflict between the Society of Angelologists and the monstrously beautiful descendants of angels and humans, the Nephilim. For the secrets these letters guard are desperately coveted by the once-powerful Nephilim, who aim to perpetuate war, subvert the good in humanity, and dominate mankind. Generations of angelologists have devoted their lives to stopping them, and their shared mission, which Evangeline has long been destined to join, reaches from her bucolic abbey on the Hudson to the apex of insular wealth in New York, to the Montparnasse cemetery in Paris and the mountains of Bulgaria. Rich in history, full of mesmerizing characters, and wondrously conceived, Angelology blends biblical lore, the myth of Orpheus and the Miltonic visions of Paradise Lost into a riveting tale of ordinary people engaged in a battle that will determine the fate of the world.

Worst Case

Book Review on Worst Case

Book review submitted by Billy Burgess

Detective Michael Bennett is back in his third outing. This time he is up against a crazed serial killer, who is kidnapping and killing collage-age kids from New York’s wealthiest families. Michael has ten children of his own to think about, as he tracks down the killer.
To complicate things worse, an Abduction Specialist, Agent Emily Parker is assigned to Michael’s case. As they move in closer, the killer changes his routine.

Once again, James Patterson uses short chapters to keep you turning the pages. You’ll easily connect with the main character, Michael - a loving, single father and a devoted cop. I like that the authors spiced things up by adding a possible love interests, Emily - a single mother. It’s a well-developed plot that is fast-paced. I recommend “Worst Case” to other James Patterson’s fans or anyone who wants to read a good thriller.

Book Club Discussion 3: #3

Go to the previous discussion question...

Since World War II, the naval power of the United States has been dominating the oceans of the world. According to the author, this gives the United States tremendous leverage in securing the position of the world's super power for the next 100 years, because control of the sea means control of the access of trade (sea is still the cheapest transport for goods). Do you think maintaining the world's largest and most powerful navy is necessary for the United States?

My Answer: In an event of another world war when there is no long-range missle, where there is no sonic speed fighter jet and bomber, I guess, yes, it is necessary for the U.S. to have the most powerful navy. I do agree that if only the U.S. decides to intimidate any country's freight vessels in the ocean, it will hurt that country's economy. I also agree that any insane country that thinks about engaging in extensive wars with the U.S. will have to worry about how to maintain supplies to their army if only the U.S. navy cuts off sea transportation.

But will the U.S. choose to give another country's ships a hard time to sail through if there is no full-blown war? Or is the U.S. free to just block any country's ship on the sea because she doesn't get what she wants from that country in trading terms or whatever cooperation? I don't think so... Yes, the U.S. navy are everywhere in the world's oceans, but so what if China disagrees with the U.S. in terms of trade deficits, or foreign policy? Can the U.S. tell China, "Sorry, China, now that you aren't cooperating with us, you aren't going to ship your products to the Americas through the Pacific... or even through the Alantic to Africa..." Of course not, the U.S. will not choose to do that, nor is the U.S. free to do that. So the super naval power really gives no advantage in terms of exerting political or economic influence at a peaceful time. But yes, a super naval power definitely discourages open attacks and sea invasions from other countries. But what stupid country is going to invade America from sea? The British tried it in 1812, but failed. Not even Germany or Japan did that...cause it was just not the most efficient way to invade America from the sea.

For how long can the U.S. afford to keep such a large naval fleet? For how much longer can the U.S. afford to patrol the seven seas? A lot of the ports in North and South America are owned by Chinese, Arabs and other foreign nationals anyway....By taking ownerships of ports and handling trillions of tons of goods imported and exported by America, other countries're just having as much influence to America's economic life line and access of internatioal trade.

In the 19th & 20th centuries, the British Empire used to have the world's largest navy but it all justified the economic ambitions of the British empire at that time because they were setting up colonies all over the world for trade access and economic gain. The British were using their powerful navy to intimidate and conquer other countries. I just don't see how the expense of keeping a large naval fleet and all these naval bases all over the world justifies the economic benefits for the U.S. (unless they use the navy like the British used theirs) It's nothing but a pure expense... It's not like the U.S. is using the navy now to threaten other countries for trade concessions, or to divert valuable resources out of an occupied colony . Since the U.S. is always playing nice and ethical instead of conquering for economic gains, I don't see the purpose of keeping such a huge navy. Most of the time, the navy really do nothing (couldn't even protect us from 9/11) but deliever free food and medicines to the third world countries. Yet these countries don't pay for the U.S. navy, we, the taxpayers do....

The motivation for war is always economically driven. Countries that have the calibre to challenge the U.S. (and as of now, no country has the calibre) are not going to start a war with the U.S. because there is no economic benefit in doing that. As long as everybody is making a decent living, there will be peace, with or without the U.S. navy. No sane developed country will dare to delcare war against the U.S. For the terrorist groups who do, they don't come from the sea anyway....and if they come from the sea, they are going to be seanky, using foreign shipping companies that own and operate ports here in the U.S... or by some other means...

Besides, the technology of warfare is not like World War I or Word War II anymore, America's enemies don't necessarily have to go through the sea to attack America. 9/11 is an example. I believe that the United States should pay more attention to her southern border cause that is where invasion by millions if illegal immigrants comes from. America's constitution is also America's weakness that enemies can very well use to attack the country. The liberal interpretation of the Constitution will be used as weapons by the enemies. What is going to stop foreigners from obtaining ingredients to manufacture deadly weapon of mass destruction right here in America? What is going to stop enemies to get jobs in the defense department, or worse yet, become the President of the Unitied States? It only takes one enemy to push one button to destroy us all here... or just a few enemies to push the buttons in serveral cities to activate the WMDs they make here.... It's not if they will do that, it's about when they will do that.. 9/11 wasn't an overnight endeavor. It's taken years in planning. Only god knows what big scheme America's enemies are planning for now, right here, right in our neighborhoods.

A strong navy isn't going to protect us in the future. The danger for America is her own constitution and ideology that the constitution applies not only to the American citizens but everybody in the world. If I have relatives who are living overseas now, who never lived one day in America, but yet, are American citizens who can vote, and who can come here to work in the government freely, or do whatever here freely, only because they were born here in the United States long time ago on these birthing tours to America....... (which advertised on our newspapers to gurantee foreign babies the U.S. passports ...)... If we have that many Chinese in Hong Kong who got American passports this way, how many of them in other countries also got their U.S. passports this way..... If the U.S. is a democracy built by votes of her citizens, the country can also be demolished by the votes of her citzens. I wonder why such privilege is given anyhow to just anyone who was born here? I just think this is totally against the interest of America's national security. Somehow, I agree with China that the voting previlage shouldn't be granted to just every citizen... cause a lot of people are just too ignorant to vote (that's China's defense for their system..). Yes China's way is a bit extreme. But personally, I think the previlege to vote should be earned...If we can't drive our cars without a license, why should we be voting without proving that we are intelligent enough to vote for America's best interest??

And now the hot guy is in hot water--wanted for murder.Abject poverty is a great motivator for learning new skills, but being trained in the school of hard knocks by people like psycho prizefighter Benito Ramirez isn't. Still, if Stephanie can nab Morelli in a week, she'll make a cool ten grand. All she has to do is become an expert bounty hunter overnight--and keep herself from getting killed before she gets her man.

Winner For Nora Robert's Dream Makers Book Giveaway

WINNER FOR THIS GIVEAWAY IS : HEIDI V

My Book Review: This book contains two of Nora Roberts' novels from back in the early 80s, "Untamed" and "Less of a Stranger". I like "Untamed" better because I find the setting of a circus more interesting. I'm very impressed by Nora Roberts' skill in describing the circus life because I felt like I was given a very good back-stage tour inside the workings of the "Big Top". The romantic chemistry and relationship dynamics between the two main characters in "Untamed" are more stimulating than "Less of a Stranger" which, I feel is more plain and lame. The only interesting element in "Less of a Stranger" is the artistic talent of the heorine, which gives me a little glimpse of how sculptors must feel when they are making their crafts. As we all remember in the movie "The Ghost" which came out much later than this story, the expression of love and sculpting can be so very romantic and sexy. I wonder if the screenplay writer in the movie "The Ghost" got inspired by Nora Roberts.....

This is the second book I read from Nora Roberts, it's not as good as the first one I read, but it's pleasant and romantic enough to give my mind the escape it so much needed after I read a mind blowing memoir for my last review.

Now that I am done reading this book, I'm giving it away to one of my blog's followers. On March 2, 2010, a winner will be randomly picked and will be announced here on this blog. To have a chance to win this book, please do the following:
